QMN-NWS RAIN GAUGE NETWORK:

The QMN-NWS Rain Gauge Network has become one of our most popular programs. Through this program, QMN members provide the National Weather Service with highly accurate measurements of precipitation.

The rain gauge network is designed to supplement data provided by various automatic sensors located throughout the state. These sensors occasionally encounter accuracy problems, particularly during severe summer or winter weather. Likewise, the observations provided by QMN members improves the density of the overall data-set, thereby improving the accuracy of forecasts and warnings.

Unlike observations obtained from the public via the Internet and other means, the QMN-NWS Rain Gauge Network provides a high level of quality control in order to insure that our data is both accurate and timely.

Those who register with the program are provided with a standard, all-seasons NWS rain gauge. The gauge is sited in a manner consistent with quality control methods outlined in our QMN-NWS Standard Operating Procedures. When measurable precipitation occurs, the member simply formats a standard rain gauge message in radiogram format and transmits it to our "NWS Liaison" station. The NWS liaison then compiles the reports, performs a brief quality control check, and transfers them to the NWS.

The rain gauge network also accepts storm damage reports, as well as emergency weather observations during major winter storms, lake-effect snow events, and flooding situations. Special net sessions will typically be scheduled and announced in advance via both "QNC" announcements and e-mail broadcasts.

While regular reporting is encouraged, failing to report the occasional precipitation event due to family committments or travel is not problematic. One simply reports when available to do so.

Reports are accepted during both the Early and Late QMN net sessions, Sunday through Friday.  If significant precipitation occurs on Saturday, the NWS representative will QSX 3563 KHz at 6:30 PM Eastern Time fo additional reports.

For specific information on the rain gauge network, please view the QMN-NWS Standard Operating Procedures.  This PDF document will provide all the information one needs to begin reporting via the program.

If you would like a program regarding the rain guage network for your local Amateur Radio Club, please contact the QMN Executive Director.

During severe weather, flooding, or winter storms, QMN provides accurate weather data to the National Weather Service.
